Brainwavz Omega In-Ear Earphones Review

mpow flame ipx7 bluetooth headphones

When thinking of buying a new pair of headphones, there are a lot of brands to choose from and many things to consider. I was thinking of buying an in-ear headphone for my friend and then I got this. Brainwavz is, I assume, new here making their way into the Indian markets. Omega is their basic or starting model. I've been using these headphones for about a week and I've tested it thoroughly. The three aspects to look for when choosing a headphone are build quality, comfort and sound quality. Apart from the build quality, comfort and satisfying sound quality are hugely dependent on the type of person who uses it. What feels great for one may not be the same for another. So I'll try my best in explaining the pros and cons of these headphones so that you can make a decision.

Detailed Review

The rating in figure 5 is a measure of what we get for the price - to - what we expect at this price.

1. Build quality (4.9/5)

The build quality of these headphones seems great, primarily because the speaker capsules are made out of steel. The cylindrical, minimalized design ensures comfort fit in ears and also looks stylish. The cables are made of good quality flexible plastic which makes it easily foldable to fit in your pocket. The right side cable has a three button remote with volume rockers, call key and a mic. The buttons feel nice to press and provide good tactile feedback. The 3.5mm jack is gold plated and therefore will ensure long life and easy connectivity. The manufacturer did the best they could in terms of quality and the rest is your responsibility to keep it safe. You should read the manual before using this.

2. Comfort (4.3/5)

This headphone comes with three pair of silicon ear tips and a pair of Comply form ear tips. The silicon ear tips come in three sizes; small, medium and large. The form ear tip is of large size. You can choose between them to ensure comfort fit in your ear canal so as to reduce external noise and to prevent the headphones from being detached unwillingly. It is important to select the best ear tips to guarantee tight fit in your ear, or otherwise you'll feel loss in sound quality especially the low frequencies. I didn't feel much discomfort or pain even after prolonged use, except I don't like bullet type earphones. So this headphones is top-notch in terms of comfort and style.

3. Sound Quality (4.3/5)

The spec says a frequency response of 20Hz - 20KHz. They haven't provided any frequency response graph or anything but we have to assume it'll produce enough volume (sound pressure) at that range. 20Hz is not deep bass (10 - 15 Hz is), but adequate for 90% people. I'm not a bass-savvy person so I love this. In fact too much bass can introduce distortion and clipping of other frequencies. Other than that, I have a feeling that the high frequencies are being attenuated in someway especially the guitars. I'm sure it's not because of the bass because I adjusted the equalizer to make it right. So higher frequency response is not that perfect I'd say. Please don't misunderstand; it's just my personal opinion. The human hearing range is from 20 Hz - 20 KHz. Anything below 20 Hz will feel like vibration and most people can hardly hear and distinguish frequencies above 14 KHz. So it's not a problem. The headphones have a sensitivity of 98dB @ 1mW (efficiency) and an impedance (electrical resistance of the coil) of 16 Ohms, which means the 6mm drivers will produce more sound pressure, or volume at the same voltage. This is helpful because you can listen to all your tracks with more than enough volume in any of your devices, be it your phone laptop or anything. But be careful before connecting to external amplifiers! Always turn down the volume before connecting otherwise you may burn the coil.

I tested these headphones by playing many tracks I use to test amplifiers, speakers, headphones etc, in many devices especially my laptop's 24 bit output interface. I played many 16 bit and 24 bit FLAC tracks, 320kbps MP3s in almost all genres including Indian Classical, Hip-Hop, Electronic, Ambient, House etc and I was able to feel good quality output at all time without any distortion.

Issues

  • I read some people saying they were getting electric shocks from the headphones. In fact I did too. This is probably because the metallic capsule of the headphone is connected to the ground or the common wire. The manufacturer could've isolated the enclosure from any signal wire. In my case the stray electric current was coming from the monitor connected to my laptop. The only way to prevent this is to properly ground all your AC outlets and devices.
  • The remote control is not compatible with all devices. The mic though, will work fine with all. This is because each manufacturer implements this feature in different way. If it works with your device, then you're lucky.

Verdict

If you're looking for a well built, stylish in-ear headphones that has punching bass, under Rs.1K, this is it. Recommended at this price range (it's a bit high though!). My precise rating is 4.65. There are other brands to choose from at this price range, but I'm sure none of them are made of steel.

PS : Listening to high volume music with in-ear headphones for extended time can cause permanent damage to ears. There are microscopic fibers inside your ear which detect sound, which once damaged, don't grow again. Eyes, ears and teeth are for lifetime ! So be careful.
